Cruzan Vibes

May 6 @ 10:00 pm - May 9 @ 11:59 pm

Cruzanvibes Band acquired its name from the “Band Leader” George Antoine Jr. AKA “Cruzanvibes George” an enthusiastic Bassist, Steeldrum player and Vocalist. George was born and raised on the beautiful island of St. Croix ~ A US Virgin Island; the natives of St. Croix call themselves “Cruicans” sometimes spelled “Cruzan” so “Vibes” was added for feeling happy! George is born to a family of musical talent; his mother started playing piano in church at the age of 13 along with other family members in Antigua where she is originally from. As George and his three siblings were growing up in St. Croix mom made sure all four of her children had some sort of musical encounter; George took piano, guitar and saxophone lessons and played the saxophone for St. Croix Majorettes marching band; however, his three sisters did not follow the musical path later in life.

In the mid 80’s George Jr. relocated to live with his dad George Sr. in Fort Myers Florida and hung around as his dad played lead with a band called “Southwest Florida Steeldrum Band”. Two years later George Sr., formed his own band called “Caribbean Stars” by this time George Sr. had taught his three younger children Harold, Linda and Michael how to play steeldrum and George Jr. played a six piece steeldrum bass. In 1991 George Sr. suffered a terrible accident that landed him in a wheelchair. While George Sr. was in recovery George Jr. picked up an electric bass guitar and continued his quest for music. After George Sr. recovered, but was wheelchair bound, they re-grouped and formed “Island Sound Reggae Steeldrum Band” and they continued playing. Shortly after Hurricane Charlie in 2004 George Jr. faded from the music scene and focused on his career as a “Crane Operator” for which he is certified.

In 2006 George met and fell in love with his beautiful wife Lorna and they wed in 2008 on the beautiful island of Antigua & Barbuda at his uncles’ hotel http://www.catamaran-antigua.com. Shortly after their marriage, Lorna encouraged George to continue his passion for music, so “Cruzanvibes” was born and guess who was there and ready to play the steeldrum? No other but dad George Sr.. His compassion and love for music was alive with him mentally, so he played as long as he physically could, in 2010 George Sr. officially retired after 60 years of playing steeldrum. Sadly in May 2013 George Sr. was called away. The passing of George Sr. touched George Jr., so in 2010 George picked up the steeldrum that his brother Harold and him bartered with and started performing solos’ for all types of events. He is so liked, he was asked to travel to a few places to perform: New York, Georgia, Lake Ozarks in Missouri, Antigua on a yacht and Jamaica for a birthday party
